Day #1: In the Beginning

"'But what about you?' he [Jesus] asked. 'Who do you say I am?'"
~Matthew 16:15

Thank you for joining me. Are you ready for a deep dive? No, we are not digging up answers to the latest conspiracy theories. This deep dive is a topic of personal and eternal importance.

Matthew records Jesus asking his disciples the question at the center of our deep dive:

"'But what about you?' he [Jesus] asked. 'Who do you say I am?'" ~Matthew 16:1

Before we start digging into Scripture, let's prepare our hearts and our minds with the same words that can be found on many warning labels today: results may vary. Why would I caution in this way? Finding an answer to who we really think Jesus is to each of us is no small task. Let us ask for the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Almighty God,
We believe in You. We know You, God, and we want to know You better. Guide us as we seek to know You, Lord, well enough to answer the question. Free our schedules to be able to commit time to You, Almighty. Bless each person who joins us on this journey, Holy Spirit. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Now is a great time to explore some Scriptures as we seek to know who Jesus really is. It is probably best to begin at the beginning:

Genesis 1:1-3
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness."

John 1:1-4
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind."

John 1:14
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

John 10:30
"I and the Father are one."

John 16:28
"I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."

Jesus was part of Creation. Jesus existed in heaven before coming to earth, and he returned to heaven with His ascension. This was all part of the Almighty's loving plan.

Jesus is part of the Trinity; the Triune God. That fact is miraculous and beyond human understanding. We will continue into this deep dive in the days and weeks to come, but this may be something that we accept by faith and the written word, even though we do not fully comprehend it.

Let us pray:
Almighty God, we praise You. You are eternal. You created the heavens and the earth and everything the eyes can see, and You saw that is was good. Guide us to a better understanding of who You are and how very much You love us. We are seeking wisdom in order to know You and glorify You, Lord. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
~Hebrews 13:8
