Lent 2025: Day #13

"'But what about you?' he [Jesus] asked. 'Who do you say I am?'"
~Matthew 16:15

Remember our focus: Who is Jesus?
Can we concisely share who Jesus is to us?
If we are still unclear about His miraculous power, today should certainly solidify which side of the eternal battle Jesus firmly stands.

Bible Verse
Mark 1:21-28
"They [Jesus and his followers] went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit scried out, 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!'
'Be quiet! said Jesus sternly. 'Come out of him!' The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, 'What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.' News about him spread  quickly over the whole region of Galilee."

Similar to yesterday, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue. Again, something in the way Jesus teaches strikes a powerful chord within his listeners. While the power of his teaching makes the people take note, it also makes an impure spirit take note.

This particular spirit was riled enough to directly ask Jesus his intent. Not only that, the spirit seems to be fully aware of the fact that Jesus could destroy them. Yes, them--the spirit referred to more than one.

Note what follows the spirit's question and also the spirit's acknowledgement of Jesus being the "Holy One of God."

Jesus takes over. A command: be quiet. Another command: come out.
What follows would certainly be disturbing in that they man shook violently and an ear-piercing shriek fills the air. Followed by silence as the realization sinks in with the bystanders; this evil spirit just did  the bidding of Jesus.

Oh, Great Mystery, forgive our unbelief. Help us to believe. With every piece of evidence that is revealed to us by Your Word and Your Spirit, guide our understanding.  We truly want to know You; we accept Your authority in our lives. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
~Hebrews 13:8
